• Image of LA Artist Delegation to Standing Rock

Over the last half century Chican@s from LA and other areas have connected with other indigenous communities through political action and ceremonial traditions. At this time at Standing Rock, our Lakota relatives and other tribal nations are holding off further destruction of sacred grounds and protecting our waters from contamination by the Dakota Access Pipeline. As a community of artists we commit to stand alongside our relatives and join them.

Twenty years ago some of these artists from Los Angeles traveled to Chiapas to connect, exchange, and learn from the Zapatistas. Ten years ago some of these same individuals reconnected with the Zapatistas, and joined the northern indigenous communities of Mexico at the International Cucapa Encampment and later in Sonora, Vicam. And now many of these artists and others are currently at, en route too and preparing to depart to Standing Rock. They journey to connect with the Lakota people and give back to a community that has given so much to Chican@s, through political action, traditional ceremonies and sobriety.

This delegation will deliver winter supplies and protective gear for first responders and frontline participants, facilitate art workshops, documentation, embed themselves into the various working groups, provide support in areas of wellness and share songs to uplift morale at the camps.

We humbly ask for you’re support and in exchange members of this delegation will commit to a report back for the LA community.

Your support will primarily cover the purchase of supplies for the camp and some travel support.
